6 tips to keep you safe and well during Songkran
Songkran Festival is one of the most joyful and anticipated holidays in Thailand. It’s a time for families and friends to reunite—whether traveling upcountry, going abroad, or enjoying water play to beat the heat. With the high temperatures of April, it's no surprise that many people head outdoors to splash and cool off. But how can we enjoy Songkran water fights without getting sick.

Here are 6 health and safety tips to keep you safe and well during Songkran

  • Avoid staying in the sun too long while playing.
Excessive heat and prolonged wet clothing can cause your body temperature to fluctuate. Adults should limit water play to no more than 4 consecutive hours, while children should not exceed 1 hour.
  • Do not use ice-cold water or throw ice at others.
Cold water can cause others to fall ill, and ice chunks may cause injuries or bruises when hitting the body or face.
  • Avoid using canal water or mixing in items like seeds or starch balls.
These may contain harmful bacteria or contaminants. Also, avoid colored water or chemicals, as they can irritate the skin or enter the body. Clean tap water is the safest option.
  • When using water guns, avoid aiming at people’s faces or at motorcyclists.
Never use high-pressure water guns—they can seriously injure the eyes or cause accidents.
  • Avoid wearing socks or enclosed shoes while playing.
Wet and enclosed footwear can lead to fungal infections. Opt for sandals with good grip and drainage.
  • Apply waterproof sunscreen (SPF 15 or higher)
before heading out to play. Don’t forget to protect your neck and feet in addition to arms and legs to avoid sunburn.
Always prioritize safety—for yourself and those around you. Songkran isn’t just about splashing water. It’s also a time for meaningful traditions like visiting temples, making merit, and paying respect to elders. And don’t forget—a simple health check-up can help ensure you're in good shape to fully enjoy the festivities. Stay safe and have fun
