How should each age group take care of "dental health"?

Development and changes in the body vary in each age group, so the care for different organs also differs. One such organ that requires appropriate care in each age group is the teeth.

Characteristics of a healthy mouth and teeth include:

  • Strong and intact teeth without any cracks or cavities. The tooth roots and gumline should be clean without any plaque or food debris.
  • Healthy gums that are not swollen, not inflamed, and have a vibrant color.
  • No bleeding while brushing, flossing, or especially during meals.
  • Cheeks and oral cavity should be free from sores, and there should be no signs of pain, swelling, or pus.
  • The bite and jaw should function normally.
Oral health care tips for each age group:
  • 0-6 months: Even though there are no teeth during this age, it is essential to clean the gums, palate, cheeks, and tongue with a clean cloth soaked in lukewarm boiled water after every feeding.
  • 6 months - 3 years: The first milk teeth start to appear around 6 months. Therefore, it is recommended to start brushing the teeth with a smear of toothpaste containing 1,000 ppm fluoride, about the size of a grain of rice. Simply touch the bristles gently against the teeth and brush in a circular motion. After brushing, let the child spit out the toothpaste without rinsing the mouth and avoid eating or drinking for at least 30 minutes.
Additionally, parents should brush their child's teeth twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime. It is crucial to take the child to a dentist once the first tooth appears and to stop bottle-feeding by the age of 1 to 1.5 years.
  • 3-6 years: Apart from teaching children to brush their teeth on their own, parents should supervise and help them brush their teeth again, using a smear of toothpaste containing 1,000 ppm fluoride. Additionally, using dental floss to clean between the teeth is important.
  • 6-12 years: Besides brushing teeth at least twice a day and avoiding eating or drinking after brushing before bedtime, parents should teach their children to use dental floss to clean between their teeth and regularly check if their teeth are clean.
  • Teens and adults: This is the age when permanent teeth replace baby teeth. In addition to using toothpaste with 1,000 ppm fluoride and brushing twice a day (morning and night), it is recommended to use dental floss to clean between the teeth and help remove food debris that brushing alone may not reach. This helps eliminate plaque and reduce the accumulation of tartar.

"Teeth" are organs that, if abnormal, can transmit pain and inflammation to other parts of the body. Moreover, if proper care and treatment are not received, it can be challenging to restore them to good health. Therefore, proper dental care in each age group is crucial to maintain a healthy mouth, beautiful, and strong teeth.
