Is it true? Do you have to wear "retainers" for life after getting braces?

This may be a matter that requires quite a bit of understanding, rather than a straightforward decision of whether you have to wear retainers for the rest of your life after getting braces. It depends on individual preferences and discipline.

Why is it necessary to wear retainers after getting braces ?

After getting braces, it's essential to wear retainers on both the upper and lower teeth to prevent the teeth from moving away from their corrected positions. Initially, retainers should be worn all day and only removed for eating and brushing. The duration of retainer use depends on the discretion of the dentist.

How many types of retainers are there ?

There are three types of retainers :

  • Hawley retainers are removable and have a base made of plastic or acrylic that matches the roof of the mouth and follows the inside shape of the lower teeth. They include thin metal wires that pass through the outside of the patient's teeth to maintain tooth alignment.
  • Clear retainers, which are favored by many, closely resemble natural teeth. They are custom-made for each individual, with a new one being produced each time to fit perfectly.
  • Fixed retainers are a single wire attached to the back of the teeth and are not visible from the outside. They are used in specific cases.

How long can you go without wearing retainers before it affects the corrected teeth ?

  • Forgetting to wear your retainer for 1-2 days is not a big issue, as you can go back to wearing it as usual.
  • If you forget for 3-4 days, put it on as soon as you remember. The retainer should fit without any issues.
  • If you forget for 1 week to 1 month, it may feel a bit tight when you put it back on because your teeth may have started to shift. The extent varies from person to person, so wear it immediately upon remembering. If the retainer fits well and your teeth are aligned as before, there's no cause for concern. However, if the retainer feels too tight or uncomfortable, indicating that your teeth have shifted significantly, consult your dentist for immediate adjustment.
  • If you don't wear your retainer at all, and when you finally try to put it on, it doesn't fit, you may need to get braces again! This could happen within 10 years (or even sooner), even if the tooth structure remains the same. Factors like age may lead to eventual teeth misalignment.

Naturally, teeth can move throughout life, whether you've had braces or not. However, those who have had braces might notice this phenomenon more clearly than those who haven't. So, even though the critical phase of wearing retainers almost all the time may have passed in the first 1-2 years, consistent retainer wear throughout life is still necessary for those who have had braces. The frequency and duration of retainer wear may vary, and some individuals may only need to wear them at night, depending on their dentist's recommendations.
