Signs that indicate that a baby is teething.

How can you tell if a baby is teething? This is another popular question for new parents regarding their little one's oral development, which can make them anxious about when it will happen and how to care for it. In general, babies typically start teething at around 6 months and continue until they are about 3 years old. However, some babies may start teething earlier or later, such as getting their first tooth at 3 months or 1 year. The signs that indicate teething can vary from one child to another.

What is teething, and when does it occur ?

Teething refers to the time when a baby's first teeth, also known as baby teeth, start emerging from their gums. This is a significant milestone for both the baby and the parents. The American Dental Association provides information about the location and names of the teeth that will erupt, but there's no need to worry if your baby's teeth come in earlier than usual. What's important is to take your baby to the dentist every 6 months after their first tooth emerges.

  • Before Birth : Babies have tooth buds for all 20 primary teeth before they are born.
  • Around 6 Months Old : Teeth start to emerge.
  • First Year : The first teeth to come in are usually the bottom front teeth, followed by the top front teeth.
  • 13-14 Months Old : First molars appear on the top and bottom.
  • 16-17 Months Old : Canine teeth (fangs) emerge.
  • 23-25 Months Old : Second molars come in on the top and bottom.
  • 3 Years Old : By this age, children typically have all 20 primary teeth.

Signs that indicate a baby is teething :

  • Gnawing or chewing on objects : Babies often like to put things in their mouths, but when they are teething, they may gnaw or chew on objects more.
  • Excessive drooling : Some babies drool a lot while teething, which can lead to wet clothing. The moisture may cause redness or a rash on the cheeks, chin, and neck. To keep your baby comfortable, gently wipe their chin and change wet clothes throughout the day.
  • Irritability : If your baby seems more irritable than usual, it could be because their teeth are erupting forcefully.
  • Trouble sleeping : If your previously good sleeper starts waking up at night or refuses to nap during the day, it might be a sign that their teeth are coming in.
  • Reduced appetite : If your baby is refusing to eat, it could be due to teething discomfort, as the pressure from chewing may cause soreness. If you're concerned that your baby isn't eating enough, consult with a pediatrician.

Simple ways to care for your teething baby :

  • If your baby is uncomfortable or in pain, you can give them a pain-relieving medicine like acetaminophen, following the dosage instructions based on their weight.
  • If there's no fever, you can use a topical teething gel on the sore gums to help relieve pain.
  • Offer a chilled teething toy to help soothe your baby's gums.
  • You can use a clean, cool, damp washcloth to gently rub their gums. This can help provide relief, although you might notice a little bleeding during this process. Don't worry; it's normal.
  • When more than half of a tooth has erupted, you can use a small, soft-bristle toothbrush designed for babies to brush their teeth. You can also use a tiny amount of fluoride toothpaste, but make sure to only apply it to the bristles. Using a small amount of toothpaste is safe for babies. After brushing, rinse their mouth and gently wipe away any foam.

During this teething period, parents need to pay extra attention to their baby's oral health since this stage can be more challenging than usual due to teething discomfort. It's an important time to start caring for your child's first teeth, ensuring they remain strong and healthy until they naturally fall out.
