Monkeypox is caused by the Poxviridae virus. Monkeylpox virus is found in many animals, especially primates and rodents such as squirrels, rats, and humans. The incubation period before showing symptoms is about 5-21 days, but most cases show symptoms in 10-14 days.

Infections can be classified as follows:
- From animals to humans: caused by direct contact with blood, secretions or pustules
- From person to person: caused by close contact with the patient through secretions or pustules. Respiratory transmission through droplets from coughing or sneezing.
- Initial symptoms are fever, headache, muscle aches, back pain, enlarged lymph nodes. After 1-3 days, a rash appears on the face and body and spreads to the extremities. The rash is most noticeable on the face, arms and legs. Most patients can recover by themselve. Severe symptoms are more common among children, with an estimated mortality rate in Africa about 10%.
- The rash is divided into stages as follows: it starts with maculopapular, vesicles, pustules, umbilicated pustules, crusted and blisters.
